Boil Water Advisory in Effect, Monday September 22, 2025

A Boil Water Advisory is in Effect for the Hamlet of Desbarats as of 11am on Monday, September 22, 2025.

Due to a water main repair, a Boil Water Advisory is in effect until further notice. Updates regarding the lifting of this advisory will be communicated through the township website (www.johnsontownship.ca), the Facebook Page @JohnsonTowshipRecreation, SooToday.com, and posted throughout the township.

We thank you for your understanding and attention to this matter and hope to have the advisory lifted in the coming days.

What to do in a Boil Water Advisory (BWA):

A Boil Water Advisory (BWA) is in effect because your drinking water has, or could have, germs in
it that can make you sick. To make your water safe for use, bring it to a rolling boil for at least one
minute (cool boiled water before use to avoid risk of scalding) OR use another safe water
source (e.g., commercially bottled water) for any of the following:

• Drinking
• Brushing teeth
• Making infant formula, ice, tea, coffee, drink mixes, puddings, jellos, etc. and discard
any of these items that have already been made
• Preparing foods that do not require cooking (e.g., washing fruit or vegetables, etc.)

Washing dishes during a BWA:

• Run household dishwashers on sanitize mode.
• If hand washing dishes, wash using warm, soapy water and then rinse dishes under
running water. After washing and rinsing, sanitize dishes by placing them in warm
water mixed with unscented, household bleach (mix 1 tsp of bleach per 1 L of water)
for 1 minute OR hand wash dishes using commercially bottled water or previously
boiled and cooled water.
• Single-use disposable dishes should be used for eating and drinking if you are unable
to safely wash and sanitize your dishes.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION:

• Do not use auto-shutoff kettles or coffee makers because they do not reach a boiling
time of one minute.
• Use hand sanitizer (at least 70% alcohol) after washing hands.
• Contact a health care provider if you are experiencing nausea, vomiting, diarrhea,
stomach pain and/or fever.
• Follow these precautions until you have been notified by the owner and/or operator of
the drinking water system, or Algoma Public Health, that the advisory has been lifted
and the water is safe to drink.
